Fundacion Universitaria San Antonio – UCAM, Spain
UCAM considers sports as a key element of students/alumni comprehensive training, so we pay special attention to all the activities related to sport practice. UCAM offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, which, in our opinion, describe and represent an area of knowledge that plays an important social role. As an academic discipline, it represents a pedagogy system of the motor behaviors which are the common denominator of all physical and sports activities. From another perspective, the huge ever-growing diversity of forms and activities of body practices results in the generalized concept of sports, which is made up by sports in the context of leisure, recreation and tourism, school and university sports, performance sports, entertainment sports and professional sports.
We would like to remark some facts that we consider as most relevant to our sport success:
- Students get plenty of personal attention by young professors (50 professors), highly qualified (over 60% doctors) and dedicated to the students´ training.
- Sports tutors who watch over harmonizing the academic and sport life.
- Our experience of 14 years (10 classes, more than 1,100 graduates). We are the first to offer both the bachelor´s degree and the EHEA undergraduate degree in the Region of Murcia.
- Students coming from related fields (e.g. Physical Education) will gain the recognition of credits obtained in their previous studies.
- High demand for students to come to study the degree with us (360 in the first year).
- UCAM Sports Center, the largest gym in Murcia, with modern facilities.
- The research background, with more than 60 master´s thesis, 14 doctoral thesis defenses and more than 45 research projects.
UCAM also organizers and participates in numerous sports competitions across the country, being the Spanish Universities Championship as the main national competition, where UCAM has an impressive record being among the top five Spanish Universities for the last few years: 1st position in 2011/2012. UCAM has also developed a sponsorship programme for various teams from the Region of Murcia in sports such as basketball, volleyball and football. The “Sports Service” is the greatest exponent in this are within the University, and its priority objective is to allow all UCAM students enjoy their preferred sport category under the best possible conditions. To accomplish this goal, UCAM has its own 3,000 square meters Sports Center, a gym with state-of-the-art equipment. The muscle-building room “Technogym”, has an area of 600 square meters, and has been awarded with the Innovation Prize in the Europe´s Top Fair of Fitness, Well-being and Health. Another relevant element of the Sports Service is the Annual Programme devoted to top level (high performance) athletes and sportsmen7women, through the University carries out a personalized monitoring process for those UCAM student athletes, with the aim of helping them overcome the difficulties that arise from balancing their academic and training activities.
